I had a great harvest today. I always love the winter bounty, partly, I think, because it’s a bit unexpected. You always expect to be picking plenty during summer and autumn, but there is something special about picking in winter!

Jazz is holding a massive cauliflower- and there are many more like it still to pick. I’m definitely going to try the cauliflower pizza base recipe that has been floating around Pinterest. We love cauliflower with a cheesy sauce over it too! But I suspect lots will be frozen, similarly with the broccoli. Also above is a row of spinach, which I tend to just pick as I need it, and some flat leaved parsley.

So above is some broccoli, which was well and truly ready to be picked. Next to the massive broccoli is a row of red cabbage seedlings, which I really hope will out grow whatever is eating them!

These rhubarb plants came from a very good friend who lives a couple of hours away. We dug them out of her garden, then it was a couple of weeks before I had a chance to get them into the ground again, so I was a bit nervous they may have dried out too much, but they are growing magnificently!

As well as these tiny spring onions I have also planted 70 onion seedlings! A time consuming job. In the past I have dug an individual little hole for each onion seedling, bit this year I dug a trench, laid all the seedlings along it, then back filled. Much quicker! They were on an angle for a while, but seem to have straightened them selves up. Ideally I’d like to get another row of the same amount planted….. we eat a lot of onions!
Finally, I have put up a temporary green house. Mainly it’s so I can get my tomatoes started a bit earlier in Spring (they’ll be protected from the frosts) but I’m also hoping to grow some winter vegies in there during the next few months….

The biggest issue will be stopping it blowing away – we get a lot of wind!
